Muscovy duck/Pato criollo (Cairina moschata)

The Muscovy is a large duck which is native to Mexico, Central and South America. It is all-dark apart from the white in the wings, with long talons on its feet and a wide flat tail. The male is 86 cm long and weighs from 2.1 to 3.2 kg, much larger than the 64 cm long, 970 g to 1.3 kg female. Its most distinctive features are a bare red face with a pronounced caruncle at the base of the bill and a low erectile crest of feathers. Muscovies had been domesticated by various Native American cultures in the New World when Columbus arrived. A few Muscovies were first brought to Europe by the white explorers at least by the 1500s. The specimen shown here is still at its juvenile age.
El pato criollo es un ave nativa de México y América Central y del Sur. Es totalmente oscuro, con la excepción de las alas que son blancas; posee largas garras en sus patas y una cola ancha y chata. El macho alcanza una longitud de 86 cm y pesa alrededor entre 2.1 y 3.2 kg; mucho más que la hembra que va entre 970 g a los 1.3 kg. Sus características más distintivas son la cara roja sin plumas con una protuberancia rojiza en la base del pico y una cresta de plumas eréctil. Los patos criollos habían ya sido domesticados por las culturas nativas de América antes de la llegada de Colón. Algunos pocos especímenes fueron eventualmente llevados a Europa por los exploradores blancos cerca del siglo XVI. El espécimen mostrado aquí está aún en su etapa juvenil.
