Largeleaf pennywort / Sombrilla de sapo (Hydrocotyle bonariensis)

Hydrocotyle bonariensis is a member in the family Araliaceae, common in many disturbed environments such as sandy areas of somewhat extreme conditions or very dry lands that are flooded sometimes. It also colonizes estuaries, coastline, sand dunes and ponds. Plants consist of long stolons (runners), from which roots, leaves and inflorescences are produced at nodes. Usually a single leaf is produced at each node, and nodes are separated by 10–30 cm of tough stolon buried at a depth of 2–5 cm. This species is gynodioecious (having bisexual flowers on some plants and only female flowers on other plants of the same species) and the inflorescence can be produced opposite the leaf of a node. Numerous creamy yellow flowers appear in the inflorescence structure, and each flower potentially yields a dry dehiscent fruit that at maturity splits two or more parts each with a single seed.
