Within the only genus in the Cannaceae family, Canna is native to the American continent, particularly South America. It includes 19 species of water plants with flowers that resemble lilies. The broad, flat, alternate leaves, that are such a feature of Canna lily, grow out of a stem in a long narrow roll and then unfurl. The flowers are typically yellow and are aggregated in inflorescences in panicles. This species grows from rhizomes that store starch and is found particularly interesting by agricultural industries in some regions of the world. They are also used to extract many undesirable pollutants in a wetland environment as they have a high tolerance to contaminants. Incluye 19 especies de plantas acuáticas con flores similares a las de los lirios. Las anchas, planas y hojas alternadas de la Achira, crecen a partir de un tallo en forma de estrechos rollos hasta que se extienden. Las flores son típicamente amarillas y están conglomeradas en panículos. Esta especie se desarrolla mediante rizomas muy ricos en almidón y es encontrada atractiva en ciertas industrias agronómicas en algunas regiones del mundo. También son empleadas para extraer sustancias tóxicas en ambientes acuáticos contaminados dado que presentan una alta tolerancia a las mismas.
