Argyope argentata

As with most members of the members of genus Argyope the female of the species tends to be much larger than the male. The body of Argiope argentata is primarily silver with brown and orange colorations further back on the abdomen on the top, with a primarily brown underbelly. The legs have bands of orange, black and sliver. The female can be up to 12 mm in length whereas the male tends to be 4 mm or less. Argyope are known for the construction of dense zigzag-shaped webbing called stabilimenta. There may be as many as four stabilimenta in a web.
Como en la mayoría de los miembros del género Argyope, la hembra de esta especie tiende a ser más grande que el macho. El cuerpo de la Argiope argentata es principalmente plateado con coloraciones amarronadas y naranjas en la parte superior del abdomen, con una banda marrón en la zona inferior. Las patas tienen bandas del mismo color y también en negro. La hembra puede alcanzar los 12 mm mientras que el macho, 4 mm o incluso menos. Las arañas Argyope son conocidas por la construcción de redes densas en forma de zig-zag denominadas estabilimentos; habiendo al menos cuatro de ellos en cada red.

Orb Weavers build large, strong, vertical orb webs. Generally, the spider constructs its web in the evenings and takes it down again at dawn. The spider rests head-down in the centre of the web, waiting for prey. During the day, the spider rests on nearby foliage with its legs drawn under the body. Flying insects such as flies, beetles and bugs are common prey. Butterflies and day-active moths are sometimes caught but are partially protected from web entrapment by the presence of scales on their wings - these scales can be shed and this may allow the insect to struggle free of the sticky web. The female of the Nephila species greatly out-sizes the male. So, very often the male Nephila spider is mistaken for an offspring when it is found on the web with the female because of its small size and different color.

Las arañas tejedoras del género Nephila como este espécimen construyen grandes telas verticales relativamente fuertes. Generalmente el animal las teje durante el atardecer y las retira al amanecer. Durante el día descansa en el foliage con sus patas retraídas. Los insectos voladores tales como las moscas, los escarabajos y otros insectos de porte pequeña son sus presas usuales. Mariposas y polillas pueden caer en su trampa pero están relativamente protegidas dado que sus escamas se adhieren a la misma y se escapan fácilmente. La hembra de las especies Nephila superan en tamaño a los machos. Debido a ello se los confunde con su prole también por su diferente color.
